Insurance for Medical and Health Clinics in Ontario
Clinics carry two kinds of risk. There is the clinical risk of the care your practitioners provide, and there is the business risk of running a facility: patients walking through your doors, expensive equipment, sensitive health records and a team of employees.
Many clinic owners assume the practitioner’s own coverage handles everything. It usually does not. Physicians typically obtain medical liability protection through the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and other regulated health professionals carry professional liability required by their college, but the clinic as a business still needs its own program.

How clinic coverage fits together
What your practitioners already carry
Regulated health professionals in Ontario generally must carry professional liability insurance as a condition of practice. For example, the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario requires members to carry at least $5 million of professional liability coverage. Physicians usually rely on CMPA protection rather than commercial insurance.
What the clinic needs as a business
A clinic program is built around the business entity and the space it operates in.
Commercial general liability for slips, falls and premises injuries
Property and equipment coverage for leaseholds, furniture and medical devices
Cyber and privacy liability for patient health records
Business interruption if you cannot see patients after a loss
Key coverages for Ontario clinics
Every clinic is different. These are the coverages a broker will usually review with you.
Clinic or entity professional liability
Patients often name the clinic in a claim along with the practitioner. Entity professional liability protects the business itself for vicarious liability arising from care provided by your staff and contractors.
- Confirms coverage for practitioners who are contractors rather than employees
- Covers administrative and front desk errors
- Can be arranged for multi-disciplinary clinics

General liability and property
CGL responds when a patient or visitor is injured on your premises. Property coverage protects tenant improvements, treatment tables, diagnostic equipment and inventory against fire, theft and water damage.
Add equipment breakdown if you rely on imaging, lab or sterilization equipment.

Cyber and privacy liability
Clinics hold personal health information, which is subject to Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act. A ransomware attack or misdirected email can mean notification costs, forensic investigation and privacy complaints.
Read our cyber insurance guide for how these policies respond.

Employment practices liability
Clinics employ receptionists, assistants and practitioners, often in close quarters. EPL insurance covers claims of wrongful dismissal, harassment and discrimination.

Business interruption
If a fire, flood or system outage closes your clinic, you still have rent, payroll and loan payments. Business interruption coverage replaces lost income while you recover.

Clinics we help connect with specialists
Physiotherapy, chiropractic and rehab clinics
Multi-practitioner clinics often mix employees and independent contractors. The program needs to confirm who is covered, under which policy, for every treatment you offer.

Dental, optometry and specialty practices
High value equipment and leasehold improvements make property and equipment breakdown coverage especially important, along with business interruption.
Medical and wellness clinics
Family practices, walk-in clinics, med spas and wellness centres each have different exposures. Aesthetic and cosmetic treatments in particular need careful review, since some policies exclude them.

Protect the clinic behind the care
Your practitioners have their own coverage. The clinic needs a program of its own that protects the space, the equipment, the records and the team.

Medical and Clinic Insurance FAQs
Does my practitioners’ malpractice coverage protect the clinic?
Usually not fully. Individual professional liability or CMPA protection covers the practitioner. The clinic can still be named in a claim and needs its own liability, property and cyber coverage.
Do physiotherapists in Ontario need professional liability insurance?
Yes. The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario requires professional liability insurance with a limit of at least $5 million. Other colleges have their own requirements.
What insurance does a new clinic need before opening?
Most landlords require CGL and property coverage before you take possession. You should also arrange cyber coverage before you store patient records, and EPL once you hire staff.
Is patient data a real insurance risk for small clinics?
Yes. Small clinics are frequent ransomware targets, and a privacy breach involving health information can lead to notification costs, investigations and complaints. Cyber insurance helps pay for the response.
Are cosmetic or aesthetic treatments covered?
Not always. Some policies exclude aesthetic procedures or require them to be specifically disclosed. Tell your broker about every service you offer.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred
Proactive Broker Relationship.
The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

Security Blanket For My Business
I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

They had my back
No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place. Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
