Super Visa Insurance for Parents and Grandparents

The super visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents visit for up to five years at a time. To qualify, they must have private medical insurance that meets Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements.

Visitors are not covered by OHIP, and emergency hospital care in Canada is expensive. A compliant super visa policy protects your family and is a required part of the application.

Choosing a super visa policy

Deductibles and price

A higher deductible lowers the premium but means paying more out of pocket for each claim.

Pre-existing conditions

Coverage for stable pre-existing conditions varies. Check how the policy defines stability and whether conditions such as diabetes or heart disease are covered.

Payment options and refunds

Some insurers allow monthly payments and most offer refunds if the visa is refused or the visitor returns home early. Terms vary.

Super Visa Insurance FAQs

How much coverage does super visa insurance need?

IRCC requires at least $100,000 of emergency medical coverage that includes health care, hospitalization and repatriation, valid for at least one year from entry.

Can I buy super visa insurance from a foreign insurer?

Coverage can come from a Canadian insurer or from a foreign insurer authorized by OSFI. Confirm current IRCC rules before you buy.

Are parents on a super visa covered by OHIP?

No. Visitors, including super visa holders, are generally not eligible for OHIP, which is why private coverage is required.

Does super visa insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Some policies cover stable pre-existing conditions and some do not. The definition of stable is important, so compare carefully.

When should I buy the policy?

Before submitting the super visa application, since proof of insurance is part of it. Many insurers refund the premium if the visa is refused.

The Commercial Insurance Difference: Feedback from those referred

  • Proactive Broker Relationship.

The most noticeable difference was the fact that I no longer felt that I was needed to manage the broker... the brokers came to me with proactive recommendations and knew when to push and shop the market and when not to. When the topic of business insurance comes up, I always refer fellow business owners.

  • Security Blanket For My Business

I was always the type of customer that never believed in insurance and only really got it because I had to. Then I connected with a broker through Commercial Insurance.ca and they asked me questions no one else ever did and that's how I knew something was different. They took the time to understand and evaluate the risks. Well, I ended up getting some extra coverage (legal expense) and thank goodness I did. Something fairly innocent turned into something quite nasty and I didn't have to do too much... my coverage took care of it. Now I look at Insurance as a security blanket for my business.

  • They had my back

No one likes buying insurance because it's a bit of a bet against yourself. You just hope that when the bad things happen that insurance will do what it said it would do in the first place.  Their specialist stand behind the policy's that they bind. They never professed to get me the best price, but they did say they have my back, and have my back, they did.
